Stay Sharp Weekly
Twelve years ago, we took an abandoned home and turned it into our dream home. We were fueled by the fixer-upper craze and the confidence from random people’s homemade how-to Youtube videos.
It was a ton of fun and a lot of work and one of the biggest blessings God has given us.
We didn’t renovate it so we could stand at a distance and admire it. We brought it back to life so we could live in it. And when you live a lot of life in a home, it gets banged up.
The truth.
Renovations don’t last.
Floors get worn, the roof leaks, holes happen, and styles change.
Just think. At some point, that old wood paneling was high class cutting edge style. Someone picked that pink toilet out and paid good money for it.
No Lasting City
I read this verse the other day and it struck me. “For here we have no lasting city, but we seek a city that is to come.” Hebrews 13:14
Because of God’s promise, the fleeting nature of what man builds and the inevitable path toward decay can spark hope in us and not despair. Why? Because we know that here on this earth, we have no lasting city. Even the most masterful plans of man will eventually crumble, but those of us who follow Christ, and have been resurrected to eternal life through his blood, seek a city that is to come.
Listen to this from Hebrews 12:28,
“Therefore, let us be grateful for receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, and thus let us offer to God acceptable worship, with reverence and awe.”
We live joyfully in the midst of this shakeable world, but its temporary nature should give us hunger, vision and anticipation for God’s promised Kingdom that cannot be shaken.
A man who lives with this kind of vision will be a bright light in the midst of growing darkness. Let’s be men of vision!
